The Mar Jok Elementary School and Neighbourhood Learning Centre is a unique and innovative School District 23 project located in West Kelowna, BC. The 42,000 ft2 school serves 460 students utilizing a non-traditional 21st Century Learning layout consisting of 19 classrooms subdivided into four groups and project areas. Rocky Point designed a highly efficient geoexchanage system with 4-pipe fan coil distribution and targeted radiant floor heating zones around high glazing perimeter areas. A central heat recovery ventilator unit provides a high level of exhaust air heat recovery. The mechanical systems were zoned to facilitate the use and setback of different zones based on expected day, evening and weekend uses. The school is the most energy efficient school of SD 23. A high level of collaboration between the SD 23 energy manager and design team was instrumental in this success. Additionally, Mar Jok Elementary School won a Tommie Award from the Canadian Home Builders Association Okanagan Chapter.
